Taylor came out on top in February 22, defending his undisputed super-lightweight crown in the process, but it was a hugely controversial decision and many believed Catterall won that night.
Since then, Taylor (19-1) has fought just once and was well off his best when losing to Teofimo Lopez in June last year, losing his WBO strap having vacated the rest of his belts, and it means no titles are on the line. Putting the controversy behind him will be reward enough for Taylor.
Revenge will be on the mind for Catterall (28-1), who last fought in October when beating Jorge Linares on points. He has been left frustrated by a number of delays, the most recent of those in March when Taylor suffered another injury, but Catterall does now finally get his chance to beat his long-term rival in Leeds.
Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall 2 — AKA 'hate runs deep' — on Saturday is potentially the most eagerly awaited rematch in boxing right now. Two years on from the most controversial of decisions that meant the Tartan Tornado kept his undisputed super lightweight world crown, El Gato final gets his chance for revenge
The atmosphere is building in at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, as a brooding fight week comes down to this. After a relatively sedate final press conference earlier in the week, both fighters had to be separated on stage at the weigh-in. Catterall weighed in marginally heavier than Taylor, but both comfortably beneath the 140lbs limit.
"That's all the talking done now. Fully focused on Saturday night, tune in it's going to be one hell of a fight," Catterall said. "It's been a long camp, I've done everything possible asked of me, everything's ready now to turn up tomorrow, re-write it."
"It's just another fight week, just another fight tomorrow night, all the training is done, can't wait for tomorrow now," Taylor said. "I will look good tomorrow and I'll look good winning."

There may be on gold on the line for this rematch, but such is the ill-feeling between both fighters that hardly matters. Taylor's victory two years ago via split decision was called "the biggest robbery in British boxing history" by one World Boxing News after the Tartan Tornado touched the canvas in the eighth round. The 33-year-old Scottish southpaw has since lost every belt – the WBC, WBA and IBF titles to inactivity through injury and considering a move up in weight, the WBO strap in the ring to Teofimo Lopez last June – and one wonders where the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist goes next in defeat.
Catterall has been desperate for another shot at Taylor since February 2022's controversy, which remains his only professional defeat. In October, the 30-year-old Lancastrian beat former three-weight world champion Jorge Linares – the best win of his career to date – to finally get his wish. "This isn't about belts, this is personal to me, and I can't wait to get my hands on him," he has said in the buildup. "I don't like him, I don't respect him. I'm going to end him."
Taylor vs Catterall 2 fight card
Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall; Super lightweight
Cheavon Clarke vs. Ellis Zorro; For the vacant British cruiserweight title
Paddy Donovan vs. Lewis Ritson; Welterweight
Gary Cully vs. Francesco Patera; Lightweight
Giorgio Visioli vs. Sergio Odabai; Lightweight

It is more than two years since the pair fought for the first time, when Taylor was incredibly fortunate to win a points decision and retain his undisputed light-welterweight status.
He has fought just once since then, losing to Teofimo Lopez, and the 33-year-old now looks to get his career back on line by beating Catterall again and ensuring there is no controversy on this occasion.
There are no belts on the line but revenge will be sweet enough for Catterall, who boasts a record of 28-1 and has beaten Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares since that disappointment against Taylor.
The ring walks for the main event are expected to start around 10.35pm, but there's plenty of action to look forward to before then, with Ireland's Gary Cully and Paddy Donovan both fighting on the supporting card, while Graham McCormack fights earlier on the evening on the Before the Bell part of the card.
The pair met in Glasgow back in February 2022, when then-undisputed light-welterweight champion Taylor controversially claimed a split-decision victory over his rival at the OVO Hydro in one of the defining bouts of modern British boxing.
The fallout has hung over both fighters since, and after Taylor lost his crown to Teofimo Lopez in New York last June by unanimous decision, the stage has now been set for the two men to put such ghosts to rest once and for all.
Catterall, in particular, will be looking to prove his mettle after the only loss of his professional career. He has recorded back-to-back wins since then in pursuit of this grudge match.
