It’s about that time with GiOtv! Thursday night football in Europe is always a good time, and we’ve cooked up some mouthwatering encounters to be enjoyed in the form of the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference league.
Get strapped in and don’t miss it.
There are a number of African players who will be featuring in these competitions, so get a taste of the African flair that awaits in Europe’s elite level.
The UEFA Europa Conference League will have two early evening kickoffs: Viktoria Plzen will play Fiorentina at Stadio Artemio Franchi, while LOSC Lille will host Aston Villa at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The main focus in the UEFA Europa League will be the late kick-offs, with the all-Italian clash between Roma and AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico.
Nigeria star Samuel Chukwueze will be seeking retribution as he lost out on the 2023 AFCON trophy in the final to Roma and Ivory Coast defender Evan Ndicka.
What better way to have the last laugh than getting a piece of club silverware to soften the blow? And especially since Chukwueze made it into the Serie A team of the week recently, his impeccable form should come in handy for AC Milan.
The player is even getting his flowers from a legendary Milan former manager, Arrigo Sacchi.
“It seems to me that players who had remained in the shadows emerged. I’m thinking, for example, of Samuel Chukwueze, who is demonstrating that he has good technical and athletic qualities,” Sacchi said about the Nigerian.
Let’s not forget the English teams who’ll be taking part in the Europa League too, Liverpool and West Ham will be in action, with their respective clashes looking to be entertaining.
The Hammers will welcome Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who are quarter to becoming the new champions of the Bundesliga.
Mohammed Kudus is one to watch, as the Ghana International has become a pivotal player for West Ham. Kudus has scored five goals in seven appearances in the Europa League and is showing no signs of slowing down.
He’s even received compliments from his manager David Moyes, who is loving it as much as the fans.
“We’re really enjoying the way he is playing for West Ham, I think he has a lot of development to come in the future and he’s settling in nicely here.
He will be important for us going forward in the future as well. He’s a young boy who has only just come into the Premier League and he’s settled in incredibly well,” said Moyes.
It would be criminal not to mention the African players bossing it for Leverkusen right now as well.
Victor Boniface, Nathan Tella, Odilon Kossounou, Edmond Tapsoba, and Amine Adli have all made an impact in their unbeaten run under Xabi Alonso this season.
Liverpool will take on Italian club Atalanta and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah remains to be the key player for the Reds as he has scored four goals in the competition this season, despite dealing with injury woes.
But Atalanta have their own special African player in their books, being Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman.
Lookman has credited his manager, Gian Piero Gasperini’s style of play for finally finding his feet in Europe.
“Gasperini is very big on playing forward and creating many opportunities to score goals. For me, he has made my football much simpler in how I think about it,” he says.
It may be European footy, but there’s plenty of African flavour helping to stir the pot too.
